Before the millions of players, billions in revenue, and esports tournaments that draw 100 million viewers, League of Legends started as an idea — an idea with a lot of teeth. Co-founders Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill met as college buddies at USC, where they bonded over their shared love of video games.
The group threw themselves into developing the game, with Beck as the lead programmer and Merrill as the designer. They worked on the massive design document while slapping together a demo in four months that could be shown at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
This is the story of their arduous journey to create that demo, which is still in use today at Riot. It’s a tale of terror and wild leaps of faith, one that’s not just about developing the world’s best multiplayer game but about making sure that game was built for the players.
