The 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL 17), branded as Tata IPL 2024, marks the 17th season of this prestigious franchise Twenty20 cricket league in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The defending champions are the Chennai Super Kings, who clinched their fifth title in the previous season by defeating the Gujarat Titans, thus joining the Mumbai Indians as the most successful franchise in the tournament's history.
The format of the tournament sees the teams divided into two groups, A and B, each comprising five teams. Teams play twice against all five teams in the other group (home and away) and once against all four teams in their group, resulting in a total of 14 matches per team. The top four teams based on aggregate points progress to the playoffs. The playoffs consist of "Qualifier 1" where the top two teams face off, and "Eliminator" where the third and fourth-placed teams compete. The loser of Qualifier 1 gets another chance to qualify for the final by playing against the winner of the Eliminator in "Qualifier 2." The winner of Qualifier 2 advances to the final match, where the IPL champions are crowned. IPL 2024 Schedule is expected to be announced soon by BCCI.
Several new rules have been introduced for the 2024 season, including the allowance for bowlers to deliver two bouncers per over, following a successful trial during the 2023–24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India's domestic T20 tournament.
